Motherboard serial port header pinout

Even now, the Windows operating system is capable of emulating a number of virtual COMs without having their physical implementations. Some probably remember computer mice, printers, scanners and other peripherals connected to the computer through this port.

Now the situation has changed, the computer peripherals are connected to the PC using faster USB ports. But in instrumentation, RS takes the rightful place, it is rare to see a digital device that can be configured by a computer without this interface. Quite often RS port serves as a transition link to the RS interface, connected via a miniature adapter.

Due to the design features, the length of the communication line is small, usually no more than 10 meters. Initially, the interface RS connector was designed as a pin connector. In this DB25 connector, a secondary RS serial channel was also provided. But in practice, only one channel was realized. Also on some modems there was a secondary channel, it signaled the status of the modem, while the primary one was busy with data transmission. In our time, the more 9-pin DB9 version of RS has taken root.

On the diagram of the pin RS connector, the black color indicates the pins common to both types of connectors. The figure and the table below show how to connect the adapter from the pin connector to the 9-pin connector. Below is the RS connector pinout for testing computer serial port. Data and handshake lines connected.

In this case, the sent data is immediately returned back and analyzed by the standard serial port verification software. Goddamit I wish I had seen this post earlier. I had the oscilloscope out and was seeing data come out of the ground pin 5. Thanks for the post. I am afraid to say how much time I spent debugging a standard cable before I found this page.

So for me I ordered the Supermicro cable on assumption they use the same non-srandard pin layout in this motherboard. You can find a cable from any number of other manufacturers. Still, it would be nice of Supermicro to specify their standard in the manual by name as well as pinout. Thanks Stuart, that is really helpful! Like most people in the comments: I wish this was made clear a lot earlier even at least in the manual. I would like to add a GPS to the serial port.

In this way, I can have a stratum 1 ntp server. If you did publish instruction for Do-It-Yourself device with this pinout, share the link with us. Some info on headers.
